How to Put Rope Caulk around Window Parts

Draft around the moving window parts allow air to leave and increase the cost of heating and cooling a home. Applying liquid dense around moving window sections will stop drafts but will also permanently seal the window shut. Rope dense resembles mud and seals the moving areas of windows but is easily removed when you want to open a window.

Open the window. If necessary, support windows by bringing a window plug between the lower part of the window and the base of the window frame. Wipe all exposed areas in the open window with a cloth. Remove all loose particles from the base of the window frame. Make sure all areas are free of loose dirt and other debris before continuing. Remove window plug. Lower and lock the window.

Draw 12 to 24 inches of rope seal from roller. Place the roller on a stable surface near the window. Slide the rope tightly into the gap between the inside of the window and the lower part of the window frame. Pull additional slack from the rope seal roller and continue pushing the rope seal in the gap. Work in the outer edge of the window, sealing all gaps. To seal larger gaps, make several passages around the window. Cut the installed rope caulk from the roller by pressing against it with a knife blade. Do not attempt to break the rope seal by pulling it from the roller with your fingers; this will cause it to stretch and shrink in diameter.
